Walnut
Street School is a middle school for sixth, seventh and eighth
graders. An extracurricular program
that encourages student participation and the support of our PTO enhances
the academic program. Our core
courses include mathematics, integrated language arts, social studies and
science. Our quarter courses are an integral part of our program and
include home economics, Spanish, research, computers and music. Students
participate in health/physical education four times a week. They have art twice
a week throughout the year. Electives include art, cooking, drama,
computers, math/science enrichment, and study skills. In addition, we also
offer an enrichment program for our gifted students in academics and music.
Our eighth graders may take Spanish I for high school credit and identified
students take Algebra I.
Intensive GEPA readiness
classes are offered in language arts, math and science. Most of our special
education classes are now taught with regular education students by
teaching teams. A strong study
skills program supports this where students receive individual help with
homework and test preparation. Our
extracurricular program includes interscholastic girls' and boys'
basketball, field hockey, baseball, cheerleading, student council, Impact
(a service club), safety patrol, concert and jazz band, chorus, yearbook
and monthly dances.
Through the student council
and faculty support, school spirit is increased with student/faculty sports
events, pep rallies which reward both scholastic and extracurricular
successes and an annual Spirit Week. Our character education program
provides opportunities for students to reach out and help others. As part
of our character education program, students are recognized monthly for
acts of kindness, participate in a school wide activity, which raises funds
for charity, and receive points for their participation in school and
community events.
We are thankful to the support
given to us by our PTO. Through extensive fund raising, this group gives us
extra programs and items needed to provide a complete educational
experience for our students. Their
contributions include field trips and assemblies, a homework planner for
each student, wish list educational items for our staff, contributions for
the 8th grade trip and dance, graduation awards, and an end-of-the-year
staff luncheon. The educational
program at Walnut
Street School
is comprehensive and the caring attitude of our staff is an extra that a
school of our size can provide. The staff of the Walnut Street
School appreciates
continued parental support and cooperation of the community.
